ABOUT US

Our Story

O.ME.R. was founded in the 1960s as a small artisan business, with the goal of producing a wide range of metal carpentry products. In 1997, following a generational transition, O.ME.R. became OMER PRODUZIONE: the company expanded and opened up to a broader, including international, market—targeting in particular manufacturers of construction equipment, earthmoving machinery, industrial, agricultural, and lifting machines.

The company specialized in laser cutting, plasma cutting, bending, and manual welding. Production is carried out on behalf of third parties: all products are designed and marketed directly by the end customer. Since 2004, in order to better meet the needs of clients and an ever-evolving market, the company has expanded its offering by introducing robotic welding alongside cutting and bending processes.

Starting in 2007, the company reorganized its production layout and adopted new methodologies—initially inspired by the “Toyota” system and later by the principles of Lean Production—with the aim of streamlining processes and ensuring greater quality and flexibility for its clients.

For several years now, we have also been offering the possibility of implementing, in collaboration with our clients, a KANBAN call-based production management system. This approach has brought numerous benefits, including: elimination of the forecasting phase, introduction of open orders, reduction of warehouse inventory, lower costs related to non-conformities, and quicker response to product modifications.
Since 2015, for the first time in the company’s history, machine tools have been introduced, allowing us to offer an even more complete and integrated service to our customers.

The Kanban method in carpentry

Kanban is a visual workflow management system that originated within Japanese industrial production, specifically the Toyota Production System, and is based on the “just-in-time” principle: producing only what is needed, when it is needed, and in the necessary quantity. The term “Kanban” literally means “tag” or “visual signal”, and the method relies on the use of signals—physical or digital—to regulate production and the replenishment of materials.

Application of Kanban in Metal Carpentry

How does it work in metal carpentry?

In the metal carpentry sector, Kanban is mainly used to manage the production and supply of components and materials, particularly those that are used repeatedly (e.g., hinges, handles, slats). Although carpentry is often made-to-order, many components are common to multiple products and are consumed regularly.

The Kanban method makes it possible to:

  • Regulate workflow based on actual demand, not forecasts.

  • Reduce inventory and waste, avoiding the accumulation of unused materials.

  • Use visual signals (tags, containers, boards) to indicate when it is necessary to produce or replenish a component.

  • Link production processes in a “pull” logic: each station takes only what it needs from the previous process, which in turn produces only to replace what was taken.

Practical Example

Let’s suppose a metal carpentry company produces furniture that regularly requires hinges, handles, and slats. For these components, a Kanban system can be implemented as follows:

  • Each time a box of handles is taken for production, a Kanban card is left behind to signal the need for replenishment.

  • The warehouse worker, upon seeing the card, refills the box only when the stock drops below a certain threshold.

  • The number of Kanban cards and container sizes are calculated based on the average daily consumption and lead times, in order to avoid stockouts and minimize inventory.

Advantages of Kanban in Metal Carpentry

  • Inventory Reduction: Only what is needed is produced and ordered, lowering storage costs.

  • Improved Efficiency: The production flow is streamlined, reducing downtime between phases.

  • Work Visualization: All operators can quickly see the status of materials and processes, facilitating collaboration.

  • Ease of Implementation: The Kanban system is simple to set up and does not require significant technological investment.
